September 2, HBIS Chairman Yu Yong made a Speech at 13th China International Steel Conference in Shanghai. This keynote speech took the Deepen Innovative Coordination and Accelerate Green and Low-carbon Development as the theme, shared the efforts and practices made by HBIS in the green and low-carbon field, and discuss the development trend of world steel with representatives of the global steel industry.

Yu Yong said dealing with climate change was the common duty to all mankind, and green and low-carbon has become the common background and common action of global industrial development. A green, low carbon and sustainable steel industry needs “three innovations”, that are energy structure innovation, production procedure innovation and material technological innovation.

Energy structure innovation is to efficiently use hydrogen energy and renewable energy such as wind, solar, and biomass energy, gradually get rid of the deep dependence on fossil energy in steel production, and solve the carbon emission problem of iron and steel metallurgy from the source.

Production procedure innovation is to reduce carbon emission intensity through the revolution of low-carbon metallurgical process such as hydrogen metallurgy, improve the proportion of short-process steel making in electric furnace.

Material technological innovation is to increase resource investment and material technology research efforts, provide more green and low-carbon materials for downstream industries, and promote green consumption upgrading of the industrial chain.

Yu Yong said that reducing carbon footprint required “five collaboration” to form the coordinated promotion and joint efforts of the steel industry chain and supply chain.

It is necessary to strengthen the collaboration between steel manufacturing and the raw fuel and material end, promote the optimization of iron resources and the innovation of energy structure, to achieve carbon reduction at the source.

It is necessary to strengthen the collaboration between steel manufacturing and clients, establish an open, cross-industry and cross-field cooperation model, to create a green mild steel iron supply chain.

It is necessary to make the collaboration of steel manufacturing and geology, chemical and other fields to carbon sink, CCUS and other disruptive carbon reduction technology research, make CO2 as high value-added products, to achieve deep decarbonization.

It is necessary to strengthen the collaboration between steel manufacturing and digitalization, comprehensively improve the digitalization level of the industrial chain, and empower the high-level green transformation of the steel industry with digitalization.

It is necessary to strengthen the collaboration of the industrial chain, seize the opportunity of global supply chain reconstruction, gather global intellectual resources, jointly carry out the research and development and application of green low-carbon iron materials, and provide green low-carbon material solutions for the market and customers.

Yu Yong said based on the above “three innovations”and “five collaboration”, HBIS and Chinese enterprises had made a series of successful practices. The 13th China International Steel Conference was held by China Iron and Steel Association and joinly hosted by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Metallurgy Branch and Metallurgy Industry International Communication Center.
